Lysaght Delivers a Winning Game Plan for Perth Stadium Project

Perth Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium under construction in Burswood, a suburb just south of Perth’s CBD in Western Australia. Scheduled for completion in early 2018, it will have a capacity of 60,000 people, making it the third-largest stadium in Australia after the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Stadium Australia in Sydney.

A multi-purpose venue capable of hosting AFL, rugby league and union, soccer, cricket and entertainment events, Perth Stadium will primarily be used for Australian Rules football and cricket.

While destined to be a world-class ‘fans-first’ stadium where Perth’s residents and visitors will enjoy relaxing hours of leisure time, the 165 metre long, 135 metre wide, five-level structure has involved countless hours of hard work on the part of all involved in the project.

This includes Lysaght’s WA team, who began their involvement in the project in 2013 and, over 18 months, coordinated the seamless supply of 1,350 tonnes of DECKFORM® zinc-coated high-tensile steel in the form of 98,000 square metres of BONDEK® Structural Steel Decking sheets needed for the Stadium’s construction.

PROJECT SPECIFICS:

  • 1,350T/98,000sqm LYSAGHT BONDEK® structural steel decking plus edgeform and rib end plugs
  • Commenced may 2015 – last sheet rolled and delivered November 2016
  • Technical advice prior to and during project
  • Coil steel management and warehousing
  • Site-specific product marking, packing and delivery to accommodate multiple construction points

THE LYSAGHT SOLUTION

Lysaght became involved in the project through their initial work with the team from Design Engineers Arup in 2013, explained Vince Carnevale, Lysaght’s WA Business Development Manager Commercial/Industrial.

“There was technical advice required in fine tuning some of the stands and overhangs that were required for the project, so we had Lysaght engineer Ashesh Singh, who is based in South Australia, come over to assist,” Vince said. “And throughout construction, as things arose, which they did, we were there straight away to provide technical advice.

“Civmec Construction Engineering was the steel fabricator, coordinating all the steel and the pouring of the concrete as part of their scope of work, so we worked closely with them from the pre-tender stage, preparing an estimate for the supply of the BONDEK® Structural Steel Decking and accessories such as the Edgeform material and Rib End Plugs in what became for us a project worth over $2 million.”

Lysaght worked closely with Civmec in weekly meetings on site over the many months to ensure all facets of steel supply met the complex and demanding needs of the project. Vince Carnevale believes comprehensive coordination of manufacturing, supply and delivery on Lysaght’s part was key to reducing the entire supply and construction timeframe on a project of this magnitude.

“Once we got the order from Civmec, we sat down and discussed how they wanted the product to come to site and from that we looked internally at our systems and how we could best meet their needs,” Vince explained.

“We carefully planned coil steel management, holding backup stock of 200 to 300 tonnes at any one time at our warehouse, with back orders coming in to refill stock levels as they were depleted. Our working relationship with BlueScope's Coated and Industrial Products Australia (CIPA) was invaluable in managing that,” he added. “We’d had the BONDEK® roll forming machine installed here in WA several years earlier, which also allowed us to short track supply time.”

Attention to detail in supplying the many thousands of varying lengths of BONDEK® Structural Steel Decking was also crucial in simplifying installation on a five-level construction site the size of a football oval.

“There were four quadrants in the construction site, with every sheet for each area in each quadrant having to be identified and correctly packed and labelled. We packed the sheets in such a way that the top sheet in the pack became the first sheet they installed, the second sheet the next, and so on, which assisted them in minimising any double handling,” Vince said.

Delivery was also a demanding process, with Vince and his team sometimes sending two or three truckloads of product out at various times of the day over 18 months to the eight tower cranes deployed in various construction areas around the job site.

“It was physically impossible, unsafe and logistically difficult to put too many packs on one truck, so we coordinated product for each area on a different truck to ensure continuous supply to the multiple areas across the construction project.”
