Colours and Finishes

COLORBOND® steel’s core colour range encompasses pale tones curated to reflect our natural environment, offering a gentle comforting aesthetic; mid tones that are earthy and beautifully evocative, paying tribute to our country’s unique palette; and deep tones with their visual simplicity that immediately convey a premium, design-driven feel.

In addition to the core colour range, the COLORBOND® steel Studio enables you to browse over 200 COLORBOND® steel colours and to use RGB or HEX colour values, or DULUX or RAL colour names to return the closest match within the library of 200 + available colours.

BlueScope is pleased to provide thermal values including Solar Absorptance (SA) and Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) and colour values (RGB and HEX) for the COLORBOND® steel colour range.

1Thermal Values

SA = Solar Absorptance

Solar Absorptance (SA) is a measure of how much of the sun’s heat that a material absorbs. Choosing a colour with a lower SA is a cooler option and may help to meet building regulations such as NCC or BASIX. These are nominal values based on new product and measured in accordance with ASTM E 903-96. For further information refer to BlueScope Technical Bulletin TB 39 Thermal performance of roofing materials.

SRI = Solar Reflectance Index

Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) provides a guide of a surface’s ability to reject solar heat, on the basis of the relative temperature of surfaces with respect to a reference black (SRI=0) and white surface (SRI=100). The SRI value of a surface is calculated from its solar reflectance and thermal emittance. These are nominal values based on new product and determined in accordance with ASTM E1980-11.

  • The colours shown have been reproduced to represent actual product colours as accurately as possible. However, we recommend checking your chosen colour against an actual sample of the product before specifying, as varying light conditions, screens and devices may affect colour tones.
  • Core palette colours vary according to the end application. We recommend contacting your preferred supplier to confirm colour availability for your selected product and the most suitable material for your project.

  • SA and SRI results for ZINCALUME®️ steel can be highly variable. Unpainted metal coated roofs, such as ZINCALUME®️ steel, have a low thermal emittance so perform differently to conventional painted surfaces (high emittance) from both an energy efficiency basis and impact upon urban heating. For the purpose of NCC and/or BASIX compliance, ZINCALUME®️ steel should be considered as having SA of between 0.50 to 0.60, SRI of 43 to 57, and can be variable depending on weathering.

2. Compared to conventional roofing materials of lower reflectance index (SRI), such as ZINCALUME® steel and all other roofing materials in the COLORBOND® steel range. The extent to which a building is cooler may vary and depend upon the particular circumstances of your building, including building location, level of insulation, location of air-conditioning when installed, building shape, building function and environmental factors. 3.
