With a wide range of colours and finishes, COLORBOND® steel is an ideal building material for a range of building applications that demand good looks and design flexibility. You're free to design with confidence knowing that COLORBOND® steel has been created with durability, performance, compliance and sustainability in mind.
Whether you're looking for colours that are subtle or bold, light or dark, or looking for colours to suit particular applications and environments, there's sure to be a COLORBOND® steel product and colour that's right for your project.
5 Layers of Protection
Manufactured in Australia and tested over the last 50 years in some of the harshest Australian conditions, genuine COLORBOND® steel is far more than just 'paint on steel'.
- The steel base is manufactured to meet relevant Australian Standards, ensuring strict adherence to the required grade and strength.
- The base is then coated in BlueScope's industry leading metallic coating incorporating Activate® technology1, to provide enhanced corrosion resistance.
- A thin pre-treatment layer is applied to optimise the adhesion of further coatings.
- A corrosion inhibitive primer is baked onto the surface.
- A topcoat of specially developed, exterior grade paint with Thermatech® solar reflectance technology2 baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking and blistering and to ensure the finish retains its look for longer.
Tested in some of Australia's harshest conditions
In Australia, our buildings face challenging weather conditions from the extremes of heat and cold, to dust, rain, wind and hail. It's for this reason that COLORBOND® steel is assessed at outdoor sites around Australia, as well as in accelerated laboratory testing. COLORBOND® steel undergoes corrosion testing, durability testing, application testing and outdoor exposure testing. As part of the assessment program, there are over 12,000 panels on exposure across Australia, ranging from moderate to very severe marine environments, and from tropical to industrial locations.
BlueScope's assessment program for COLORBOND® steel is designed to replicate building applications in actual Australian conditions. By recreating actual building applications – including varying pitches, profiles, product types and the inclusion of unwashed areas – BlueScope's assessment regime exceeds Australian testing standards for steel building products, giving a genuine understanding of how COLORBOND® steel will perform on real buildings.
Conforms to standards and codes
COLORBOND® steel made by BlueScope is manufactured to meet the material requirements of relevant Australian Standards (including AS 1397 and AS/NZS 2728) and the 'deemed-to-satisfy' provisions of the NCC (National Construction Code).
The colour of a building's roof can make a difference to cooling bills and 5 of the 22 colours in the COLORBOND® steel palette qualify as solar reflective (light coloured) roofing under the Green Star Communities tool. In addition, 21 of the 22 COLORBOND® steel colours feature Thermatech® solar reflectance technology2. Thermatech® technology is designed to reflect more of the sun's heat on hot sunny days, which can mean less dependence on air-conditioning, plus reduced heat stress for the roof.
For BlueScope's highest solar reflectance prepainted steel product, consider COLORBOND® Coolmax® steel (available in the colour Whitehaven®) which has been specifically designed to provide and maintain high solar reflectance.
COLORBOND® steel is durable and resilient to Australia's harsh climate and its long life helps conserve resources and energy that may otherwise be invested in products with a shorter life span. All COLORBOND® steel contains recycled content and is 100% recyclable. In some cases, it can be reused without reprocessing, again saving on energy and resource use. It is a lightweight material which can mean a lower cost to transport to site and a lighter roof structure. And it is strong, which means it can help protect a build in stormy weather. Together, COLORBOND® steel's beauty, strength and environmental performance combine to make it a responsible choice for your future and the environment.
COLORBOND® steel roofing, walling, gutters and downpipes are also compliant for use in bushfire zones, including the most extreme, BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone) specified in AS 3959-2009.
When you specify COLORBOND® steel you are specifying products made and backed by BlueScope, one of Australia's largest manufacturers. BlueScope offers a variety of warranties up to 36 years depending on the end use and location of the build and subject to application and eligibility criteria3.
