THE PROJECT

Rebuilt with the support of a caring community, the large dormitory which forms the heart of Forest Edge Recreation Camp has risen from the ashes of WA’s devastating January 2016 bushfires – complete with a stunning 40m snake made of LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® cladding created by artist Richard Aitken with the help of Lysaght.

Owned since 2006 by Sonia and Graeme Watson, Forest Edge has become a treasured destination not only for schools but also for countless family, sporting, church and corporate groups who have come for the fabulous ‘Forest Edge experience’.

Not only the Watsons, but thousands of people in the local community and beyond, were devastated when Forest Edge was destroyed in bushfires - so many of them came together to help their beloved camp rebuild the 140-person dormitory that has always been its heart.

One such person was the Watson’s close friend, Richard Aitken, who contributed a unique symbol of regeneration in the form of a 40-metre-long, multi-coloured steel snake called ‘Regie’ which now adorns the expansive front wall of the building.

THE SOLUTION

The creation of ‘Regie’ presented more than a few challenges, which Richard overcame with the welcome assistance of Lysaght team members Vince Carnevale, WA Business Development Manager, and Chris Manger, WA State Sales & Marketing Manager.

The two met with Richard just before Christmas 2016 to not only arrange the donation of the LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® cladding and accessories, but also offer technical assistance in creating the intricate artwork.

Advice was offered on how best to cut the material, which way to lap it, the use of tech screws and rivets for joining it and the best methods of fixing the artwork to the actual wall cladding. The colour scheme was also discussed, with Lysaght searching within its systems to supply the required colours and even finding a particularly unique red colour among surplus stock.

LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® CLADDING

Befitting the uniquely Australian nature of the artwork, artist Richard Aitken chose Australia’s original corrugated roof sheeting and wall cladding. LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® cladding is ideal for modern and traditional architecture in residential and commercial applications (and for the odd snake, apparently), providing a lightweight yet strong roofing and walling material which can be laid flat or sprung curved.
